On the German side, the JUNGHANS company history started with the foundation in 1861 by Erhard Junghans of a company dedicated to watch manufacture. Diversification into fuze design and manufacture began in 1905 as a second core activity of the company. JUNGHANS was taken over by the Diehl Group in 1957, which gave a special boost to the fuze activities. In 1984 the fuze business was completely separated from the watches branch, resulting in 1999 in the foundation of a new separate legal entity, the JUNGHANS Feinwerktechnik GmbH, a widely recognized, world-class market leader in the fuze domain. In 2000 Diehl sold the JUNGHANS watch business, thus fully concentrating on the defence business. In preparation of the merger with the French Thales Group fuze business, JUNGHANS Feinwerktechnik was renamed JUNGHANS Microtec GmbH in 2007.
On the French side, the first fuze activity began during the first world-war period to support the Brandt light portable mortar system. Electronic fuze activities commenced in the late 1950's within two companies TRT-Philips and Thomson-CSF.
In 1990, the merger of the French fuzing activities of Thomson-CSF and Philips Defence into a single company led to the creation of Thomson-TRT-Defense Munition Electronic. The merger with TDA Armements with the centralization of the activities in La Ferté took place in 1995. In preparation of the merger with the German Diehl Group fuze business (JUNGHANS Microtec GmbH), Thales' fuzes activities and capabilities were separated and concentrated in the new legal entity T2M S.A.S.
In 2008 JUNGHANS Microtec GmbH was formed as a joint venture company between the Diehl (55% share holding) and Thales (45% share holding) Groups, with JUNGHANS T2M structured as a 100% subsidiary of JUNGHANS Microtec GmbH.
This strategic action brought together two businesses with long established expertise in the field of military fuzes for munitions, and created the opportunity to yield synergistic customer and business benefits in complementary design, technology and manufacture.
In 2015 the brand JUNGHANS Defence, representing the Joint Venture, was added.
